Fixed vs zoom lenses for wildlife photography

I often get asked this question: which lens should I buy for wildlife photography? There are a couple of options, the main two are to go for a zoom lens with a variable focal length, or a lens that has a fixed focal length. But which one is better? Hello. Thanks for asking the question. Sometimes life just gets in the way. Without going into all the details I’ve had several difficult years personally and unfortunately photography has taken a back seat. Also I found that as I posted videos I just wasn’t getting enough views and so I don’t qualify for ad revenue. The result is that there’s not a huge incentive or payback to keep putting the effort into making videos. I know there aren’t lots of wildlife photographers making videos but when you go out shooting it isn’t easy to make a video. There are often long periods of no action. And there is only so much you can say. I may come back to it at some point. Who knows 🤷‍♂️

A very pleasant way to spend a few hours Jon, although I admit these days I very rarely photograph the birds but just like to watch them come into the garden... In the last few weeks I have been out and put up about a dozen bird boxers with my mate - we are both bird lovers. I was smiling at you getting a lttle excited at the bullfinch - not to make you jealous but both male & female bullies come to my small garden, today whilst washing up the dishes I had 3 males and 2 females in at the same time🙂 Lovely bird at 11:34, was that a willow tit. I was jealous seeing the crested at 11:52, we don't get them around here. Gorgeous light n conditions to shoot in. Some cracking images. atb Alan

Snow just transforms a landscape I find. Lovely conditions Jon and some very nice images, the pick for me being the scene you said you had shot previously at 6:10. We have had very little snow in South Wales this winter sadly whilst recently the east coast of the UK has experienced a real dumping of white stuff. With lockdown still in operation though chances to get out and photograp stuff wouldn't have been possible even so. Enjoyable session Jon.

Hi Jon, another enjoytable session with some cracking images. I used to do a fair bit of bird photography in my garden when I was in camera club but sorta gave it up after I got tagged the tog with bird on a stick, lol. I enjoy bird watching probably more than taking them - landscapes are my 1st love - but during the summer lockdown I decided to use the G9 to film the woodpeckers coming into my garden, it was a very enjoyable session and I put together a little video and placed it on my small channel for friends to see. I get lots of birds in my small garden as there is nothing out the back of the house apart from a small copse of trees. atb Alan ruclips.net/video/yrAAbifS5CE/видео.html

Like Hibon below I have just stumbled across this video and your channel. Some of the best woodland photography I have seen in an age and last year in the UK we were lucky to get a good colour that lasted for more than a few days athough lockdown kept many of us away from those fabulous locations. The light in these images were exquisite Jon and that fuji really performed well. I will say I have no knowledge of you or what you normally shoot but you mention wildlife in your outro so I am guessing this "impromptu shoot" as you called it is not your genre of choice - well I must go now and just what you really like to shoot. Very enjoyable and I really couldn't pick a fave as they were all outstanding - all in one shoot n'all. Atb Alan

Hi Alan, thank you for the kind comment. So basically I primarily shoot wildlife, but I have a passion for landscapes too, but live in a country which doesn't afford big vistas, or seascapes. So I have to work hard to get landscape images and end up returning to the same spots, especially during Covid times. This video was impromtu, but it is a local forest where I do spend a lot of time photographing. Autumn is best, winter is the worst. Like most forests here it is 90% beech trees, so not much diversity.
